The Australian Curriculum in Victoria

Welcome to AusVELS

AusVELS is the Foundation to Year 10 Curriculum for Victorian government and Catholic schools for implementation from 2013. AusVELS outlines what is essential for all Victorian students to learn for F-10 and includes the Australian Curriculum F-10 for English, Mathematics, History and Science. It provides a single, coherent and comprehensive set of common achievement standards which schools use to plan student learning programs, assess student progress and report to parents.

Domains and levels

AusVELS includes the Australian Curriculum F – 10 learning areas English, Mathematics, Science and History within the structure of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). AusVELS uses an eleven level structure to reflect the design of the new Australian Curriculum.

Some Victorian schools will trial aspects of the Australian Curriculum in 2012. The focus of the trial will be on the scope of the curriculum, new learning resources needed to support teachers implement the curriculum and the utility of the achievement standards for formative and summative assessment purposes. A particular focus for government and Catholic schools will be on the extent to which an 11-point scale of learning achievement provides for adequate indicators of student learning progress. The outcomes of the trial, including any recommendations/proposed amendments, will be published by the VCAA in Term 4 2012.
